Grandparents, parents, kids, one golden retriever. The master suite was enormous. We hiked to the waterfall one morning and my father-in-law, who is seventy-four, led the way. The cook made this pozole one evening that had the whole table quiet. Pool water was cool in the mornings — refreshing after the hike. The dog had the best vacation of all of us, honestly.
No neighbors. No traffic. No notifications (barely any signal). Just Pacific waves and the sound of whatever bird lives in the trees out front. We surfed, bought fish from a local panga, cooked it ourselves with lime and salt. Read books. Slept ten hours. This is not a luxury villa with a butler and marble floors. This is a house on a wild coast for people who want to disappear for a while. We did. It was exactly right.
Careyes is Mexico’s best-kept secret for people who want zero crowds. Casa Tauro sits on a cliff with the Pacific crashing below. No AC, no resort infrastructure. Six bedrooms, dramatic views, spectacular sunsets. We swam at the private cove, ate at the polo club, explored the painted houses. You need a car and an adventurous spirit. The reward is a Mexico that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
